Monumental Passage.

This study explores the character of classical architecture through its scale, symmetry and carefully considered details.

Rather than focusing on a surrounding street scene, the composition is centred on the structure itself, allowing the arch, recessed panels and repeated forms to become the main visual features.

Each architectural element was considered separately before being brought together, from the heavy stonework and deep shadows to the surrounding trees and ground lines that help establish its scale.

" The more I simplified the forms, the more monumental the building began to feel."

02. Breakdown of Details

Every finished illustration is built through a series of focused studies. Rather than refining the entire drawing at once, each sketch explores a single element of composition, movement or texture before contributing to the final artwork.

Exploring proportion, simplified aerodynamics and an aggressive front-facing stance before establishing the

Architectural studies balancing layered stonework, perspective and surrounding detail to frame the composition.

Exploring the overall form of the building through symmetry, repeated panels and simplified architectural shapes.

Looking more closely at the central passage, with deep recesses, layered stonework and strong shadows helping to emphasise its depth and structure.

Small details at ground level help establish a sense of scale, from the surrounding trees and subtle ground lines to the simplified forms framing the architecture.

03. Final Artwork

Created digitally using the original sketchbook studies as a foundation, while preserving the expressive hand-drawn character of the first sketches.

celebrating the original hand-drawn artwork rather than concealing it.

05. Artist's Notes

" I love the balance of abstract style and the small details that make it truly monumental to the audience."

Monumental Passage was an interesting piece because the architecture naturally lends itself to a much more controlled and symmetrical approach. I found myself constantly deciding how much detail to keep, and how much could be simplified without losing the strength of the structure.

What surprised me most was how much the surrounding elements affected the final drawing. The trees, ground lines and subtle shadows were not originally the main focus, but they helped create a scene that matched the arch perfectly in my opinion.

It isn't my favourite sketch of this series due to the real abstract style of sketching over pure details within, but I do love how natural it was to draw. It was enjoyable in a sense it flowed from my hand to the page, something I will continue to follow in my artistic journey.
