This page documents the early development behind Dust Line Study.
The initial sketches focused on capturing the movement of gravel, drifting dust and the changing shape of the road as the car passed through the landscape.
Each annotation marks another step towards understanding how motion can be suggested using only line and texture.

02. Breakdown of Details
Every finished illustration is built from a series of focused studies. Each sketch isolates a different element, from vehicle form and terrain to dust, texture and movement. Before contributing to the final composition.
Exploring proportion, simplified aerodynamics and an aggressive front-facing stance before establishing the
final illustration.
Architectural studies balancing layered stonework, perspective and surrounding detail to frame the composition.
Exploring the vehicle's proportions and stance, while keeping the abstract form that could be recognisable as an old-school rally car.
Studying the crowd and scenes inches away from the hurtling monster, showing the true danger that rallying had to offer in a past time.
Testing different methods of drawing drifting dust and loose gravel to create depth, atmosphere and a stronger sense of speed.
03. Final Artwork
Created digitally using the original sketchbook study as a foundation, while preserving the expressive hand-drawn character.

Every garment carries the finished illustration exactly as it was intended,
celebrating the original hand-drawn artwork rather than concealing it.
05. Artist's Notes
" Movement isn't only created by the subject,
it's created by everything surrounding it. "
When I started Dust Line, I wanted to capture what makes rally so fascinating to me. Cars are travelling at incredible speed with spectators standing only inches away, yet there's still a sense of calm and control from the driver. I wanted the artwork to make people feel that slight unease of how close everything is to chaos, while also appreciating the skill it takes to keep the car exactly where it needs to be.
