Gothic Grandeur.

This study explores the character of Gothic architecture through its dramatic proportions, intricate details and strong sense of verticality.

Rather than focusing only on the building as a whole, the study breaks the structure into smaller elements, allowing its distinctive features to be observed and understood individually.

Each element was explored separately before being brought together, creating a final illustration that reflects the scale, character and detail of the architecture.

" Some buildings demand to be looked up at.
Their details are what make them unforgettable."

02. Breakdown of Details

Every finished illustration is built through a series of focused studies. Rather than refining the entire drawing at once, each sketch explores a single element of composition, movement or texture before contributing to the final artwork.

Exploring proportion, simplified aerodynamics and an aggressive front-facing stance before establishing the

final illustration.

Architectural studies balancing layered stonework, perspective and surrounding detail to frame the composition.

Exploring the dramatic height and symmetry of the Gothic towers, focusing on the repeated forms and pointed spires that give the building its distinctive silhouette.

Focusing on the relationship between the windows, stonework and decorative elements, capturing the layered detail that gives Gothic architecture its depth.

Studying the smaller details within the façade, from arched openings to carved features, to understand how decoration contributes to the character of the structure.

03. Final Artwork

Created digitally using the original architectural studies as a foundation, combining the individual details into one expressive hand-drawn composition.

04. On The Garment

Every garment carries the finished illustration exactly as it was intended,

celebrating the original hand-drawn artwork rather than concealing it.

05. Artist's Notes

" The scale of the building was what first caught my attention. I wanted the drawing to feel just as imposing as the architecture itself."

Gothic Grandeur was an exercise in looking beyond the overall silhouette and paying attention to the smaller details that give Gothic architecture its identity.

The biggest challenge was keeping the drawing detailed without letting the architecture become too overwhelming, especially with so many small elements competing for attention.

I was surprised by how much character emerged from the finished piece, and how the details I initially found difficult to draw ended up becoming some of my favourite parts.
